U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Aug. 15, 2007... “ ...there's about probably some 10 percent to 20 percent of the current [transportation] spending that is going to projects that really are not transportation, directly transportation-related... like bike paths or trails."
Secretary Peters is wrong and should be corrected. My friends and acquaintances ride the trails without clogging the streets with more motor vehicle traffic or adding to pollution — and getting exercise to boot! Biking and walking have minimal impacts on our transportation system and infrastructure while receiving much less than their fair share of funding!
