Google's leading, but will Toyota follow?
Dear Friend,
This week the RAN crew is flashing a big "thumbs up" to Google. We want to plug you into the good news -- and ways you can help keep the momentum rolling!
The good news: Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has just announced the launch of their 10 million dollar plug-in hybrid electric vehicle initiative (RechargeIT), and unveiled the largest solar charging station in the country.
Plug-ins are twice as efficient as conventional hybrids and they dramatically reduce vehicle emissions. Google's support of plug-in technology is a quantum leap forward in the movement to demonstrate that plug-in cars are viable, marketable alternatives to the gas-guzzling cars and trucks currently clogging our roads.
The bad news: Due to the foot-dragging of automakers like Toyota, it's almost impossible for anyone who doesn't work at Google to drive a plug-in vehicle. Automakers have refused to add a plug to their hybrid cars. This means that right now, if you want a plug-in car, you can't just buy one. You have to buy a regular hybrid and THEN go through the expensive process of having another company convert your hybrid to a plug-in.
This foot-dragging is especially outrageous because Toyota -- supposedly an environmental leader -- has done the least of all the automakers to move toward the large-scale manufacture of plug-in hybrids.
So what's the next step? It's high time for automakers to hurry up and meet Google in the 21st century by building plug-in hybrids, the best existing solution to gas-powered vehicles. We're asking RAN activists like you to get Toyota to follow Google's lead.
Let's get as many people as possible to let Toyota know that the public demands the option to purchase plug-in hybrid vehicles. Click here to send your letter to Jim Press, President of Toyota North America.
