Action Alert! No war with Iran!

Call your Senator NOW and tell him or her to vote NO on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment.

The Senate is poised to pass an amendment tonight that would put the US one perilous step closer towards war with Iran. The Kyl-Lieberman Amendment (No. 3017) would allow the US government to use any means necessary to stop Iran's involvement in Iraq. This includes military action, which is explicitly stated in the text. Many members of Congress have stood up to voice strong opposition to the amendment. They view this provision as an authorization for war. They argue that such an expansive resolution, in the absence of substantive debate and hearings, is unwarranted and believe that passage of this amendment would plunge the US down a slippery slope toward war. The Amendment can be defeated and war can be avoided.

Call your Senator NOW and tell him or her to vote NO on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment.

Points:
1) I am calling to urge the Senator to vote “No” on the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment No. 3017 to the Fiscal year 2008 Defense Authorization bill.

2) The Kyl-Lieberman amendment is a provocative measure that will only undermine efforts to resolve tensions with Iran through diplomacy.

3) Provocative measures such this can lead to a tit-for-tat escalation resulting in military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. The solution to the US-Iran stand-off lies in diplomacy, not through unilateral sanctions and threats of war.

4) If we have learned nothing else from Iraq, it is the danger of endorsing selective intelligence and uncorroborated claims quickly, without foresight or due consideration of the consequences of such an action.

5) By further destabilizing the Middle East, a military confrontation with Iran would result in a humanitarian disaster and put American troops and our allies in the region in further danger.

6) As a constituent and an American of Iranian descent, I am compelled to speak out on this issue. I urge you to consider the serious implications of such a resolution during this tense period. Vote “No” on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment.
