Mohican Wilderness is near Mansfield, Ohio at the outskirts of Southeast Ohio's foothills. Rolling hills and filled with nature this was a great weeks getaway from the flat cornfields of Northwest/Central Ohio. Dick and I packed up-more gear than usual for a summer ride. My friend Mary would join us and was offered the use of her fathers truck. Perfect! What a blessing to be able to pack in many creature comforts and also to toss the bike's in the back for Sunrise rides on the three major Rails-to-Trails in the Mohican area.
The B&O Trail from Mansfield to Butler was a nice 40 miles roundtrip. Nice mornings ride and no real run in's with any city traffic as we neared Mansfield. Day two was meant for the Kokosing Gap Trail out of Danville, Ohio. What a treat, Kokosing is a real destination trail. 30 miles roundtrip of cool dense groves packed with wildlife. Many deer running alongside the path and three fawns just hanging out right on the trail, not more than fifty feet ahead. The river nears the Rail-Trail and there is an acual Engine, Boxcar, and Caboose parked at the historic Kokosing Gap Depot (rest area).
East to Ahmish country for day threes ride on the Holmes County Trail. Running south from Fredricksburg there are two lanes on this 20 mile round trip Rail Trail. One lane for cyclists and one lane for 'Buggies.' Now check this out though... Near the south end of the trail theres a walmart right-in the parking lot Walmart built garages for the Ahmish buggies to park. What a trip eh? Anyway they were all really nice rides. Kokosing Gap was for sure my favorite-a real destinatin trail.
Weather was great with some small storms passing friday night, but we all packed in the truck and went into Mansfield for $2 movies and Chineese buffet. Not too much traffic at our campground Mohican Reservation. A handful of campers on saturday night but mostly had the place to ourselves, save the occasinonal Racoon. One chipmunk gave a good show as he rounded the site heading for the bbq then over to the pot of baked beans cooling on the ground. That little sucker walked right up, moved the lid to the side, grabbed a single bean out of the pan, and proceeded to gobb it down like a freekin taco. What a performance.
A great week resting, eating lots of junk food, and just chillin was just the thing to get me grounded for the summer. There are lots of NEW PICS including a trip through the Mansfield Reformatory. 1880's through 1990 - Featured on "Ghost Hunter," "Tapps," and several feature films like "Shawshank Redemption" it was very interesting. I'd love to go back for one of their Ghost Hunt Nights. They turn you loose in the place with flashlights... yuH! Also a brief stop at Malabar Farm, Mohican Country is really beautiful land. It was a great trip. Highly recomended!
